Tesla Motors Inc. tells reporters it has begun making Powerwall stationary battery systems at its “gigafactory” outside Reno, Nev., even as plant construction continues.
The company has erected about 1.9 million sq ft of structure so far. When completed in 2020, the $5 billion, two-story modular facility is expected to enclose at least 10 million sq ft and be able to make enough lithium-ion cells per year to power about 500,000 electric vehicles.
Tesla says the plant will launch low-volume battery output for the company’s electric cars by year end. The company has estimated the factory will be able to lower battery costs 30% when it reaches high-volume output.
