Suzuki Motor Corp. is preparing to begin testing a fleet of about 50 small electric cars in India ahead of introducing its first EV—the Wagon R minicar—there in about 2020, The Nikkei reports.

Suzuki controls almost half of India’s passenger-vehicle market. The company has estimated that the country’s vehicle market will grow at an average 9% annually, achieving 10 million units by 2030.

India’s EV market is microscopic, largely because of a lack of government policy and no clear plan to develop the infrastructure needed to recharge such vehicles.

Last November Suzuki signed a deal with Toyota Motor Co. to co-develop electrified vehicles for the Indian market. Under the agreement, Toyota will provide Suzuki with technical support to develop EVs, and Suzuki will rebadge such cars for Toyota to sell in India.
