Stuttgart, Germany, has agreed to enforce a partial ban on older diesels next year after losing an appeal to reject the court order that requires it.

Germany’s highest administrative court ruled in February that cities were allowed to impose their own diesel rules for the sake of meeting European Union air quality standards. A local court later ordered the city to ban diesels that conform to Euro 5 or lower emission standards.

German environmental group DUH has sued to begin diesel bans that target soot and nitrogen oxides levels in several large cities. The group contends that diesel bans are necessary because milder steps taken by cities to date have been ineffective.

Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg are readying diesel bans now. The prohibitions typically are along specific thoroughfares and during specified times. Last week a court ordered Bonn and Cologne to take similar steps.
