Siemens AG and England’s Cranfield University plan to run a 1965 Ford Mustang with autonomous driving capabilities at the annual hill climb during this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed event.

The partners modified the classic pony car with advanced sensors, GPS and control algorithms. The software, which controls the car’s throttle, steering and braking, is programed to drive the 1.2-mile course without any traffic.

Power will come from the 1965 Mustang’s standard V-8 engine mated with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Cranfield engineering professor James Brighton will be onboard to assume control if necessary.
