Renault-Nissan plans to introduce at least 10 vehicles with autonomous-drive systems over the next four years. The technology will be available in unnamed mainstream models worldwide, according to the alliance partners.

The initiative will begin later this year with a system that can autonomously control throttle, braking and steering functions—including stop-and-go driving but not lane changes—for highway applications. Multi-lane highway capability will be added in 2018, and by 2020 Renault-Nissan expects to offer vehicles that can navigate intersections and heavy urban traffic without driver inputs.

Renault-Nissan also is readying a host of new connectivity features. The first, due to bow later this year, is a smartphone app that will allow users to remotely activate and control select vehicle functions. More advanced multimedia systems will be added in 2017 and 2018, including a “virtual personal assistant” feature designed for business-related activities.
