Smartphone app developer Ridecell Inc. has acquired California-based Auro Robotics, which specializes in automated driving systems for low-speed shuttles and similar applications.
Following the acquisition, Auro will become Ridecell’s Autonomous Driving Division. San Francisco-based Ridecell says the merger will enable it to provide integrated on-demand autonomous shuttle and car/ride-sharing services at college and corporate campuses.
Auro was founded in 2013 by robotics experts from New Delhi’s Indian Institutes of Technology and Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University. In 2015 the company launched a self-driving shuttle service using golf cart-like neighborhood electric vehicles at Santa Clara University in California.
Ridecell also is publicly launching its autonomous vehicles logistics platform, which the company previously has tested in several pilot demonstrations. The platform helps fleet companies manage the refueling, cleaning and maintenance of autonomous vehicles.
