Volkswagen AG is partnering with China-based NIU Technologies to make electric scooters for urban commuting, says Germany’s Die Welt.
The companies will jointly produce the “Streetmate” scooter (pictured) that VW unveiled in concept form in March. The Streetmate has a top speed of 45 kph (28 mph) and can travel 60 km (37 miles) per charge. The 65-kg (143-lb) scooter is propelled by a 2-kW electric motor built into the hub of the rear wheel.
Changzhou-based NIU, which was founded five years ago, offers a variety of sit-down electric scooters in China and Europe. Last month the company won import certification to sell its scooters in the U.S. and South Korea, Electrek reported last month.
NIU says it has delivered some 640,000 e-scooters in China and Europe to date. The company’s products range in price from $400 to $9,300.
