Volkswagen Group’s new CEO Herbert Diess met earlier this month with the U.S. Dept. of Justice and FBI about the carmaker’s diesel emission cheating scandal, according to Bild.
The Berlin-based tabloid cites no sources. It says Diess traveled to the U.S. and was accompanied in the interviews by Larry Thompson, the U.S. monitor appointed last year to assess VW’s efforts to reform. Reuters says a source confirms the visit but offers no details.
Diess is a former BMW AG executive who became the head of the VW brand in July 2015. That was less than three months before the group’s diesel cheating scandal was revealed.
Bloomberg News reported on Monday that the Justice Dept. has agreed to allow Diess to travel outside Germany without fear of being arrested in connection with the continuing diesel investigation.
