Prosecutors in Germany could fine Daimler AG between €800 million and €1 billion ($897 million-$1.1 billion) for a variety of violations of European Union diesel emission rules, Der Spiegel claims.

The magazine says German vehicle authority KBA has identified engine control software that was used to evade pollutions standards for diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz C- and E-Class cars.

KBA has ordered the company to recall 280,000 vehicles, Der Spiegel says. Prosecutors are mulling fines as great as €5,000 ($5,600) per noncompliant vehicle, according to the report.

The prosecutor’s office in Stuttgart says its investigation continues and is not likely to be completed until year-end.
