Apple Inc. has discussed possible deals with at least four companies to supply next-generation lidar sensors used in self-driving vehicles, sources tell Reuters.
The report suggests that Apple’s secretive Project Titan wants to develop the entire system necessary for a vehicle to perceive its surroundings and function autonomously. Earlier reports indicated Apple was focused only on the software to control robotic vehicles.
One of Reuters’ sources says Apple is intent upon controlling the “perception stack” of cameras, sensors, processors and software for a car, regardless of who builds the vehicle itself. Two other sources say the company hopes to make a revolutionary breakthrough in lidar sensor design with a device it is developing internally.
Reuters notes that Apple recently added former Google and Tesla technologists and has ramped up its road testing of autonomous vehicles.
