Renault SA expects to sign an agreement with Algerian officials next week that will enable the company to construct an assembly plant near Oran, Algeria.
The new factory will eventually have annual capacity of as many as 75,000 subcompact vehicles, according to the company. Renault closed its original Algerian plant in 1962 after the country won independence from France.
The new facility is part of the company's push to expand sales in Africa, especially the fast-growing Algerian market, where Renault is the top-selling brand. (Its budget Dacia marque ranks fourth after Peugeot and Hyundai.) The country's auto sales surged 47% to 225,000 vehicles in the first half of 2012.
