Renault SA has officially opened its new assembly plant in Oued Tlelat, Algeria. The €50 million facility has annual capacity to assemble 25,000 vehicles from kits.
The factory is making the Symbol, a low-cost variant of the Renault Clio small sedan. The facility is a joint venture between Renault and the Algerian government. It also is the country's first auto plant since Algeria gained independence from France in 1962.
Renault says the factory's output may eventually be expanded to 75,000 units with the addition of body and paint shops.
Algeria, with an overall annual market volume of 425,000 vehicles, is Renault's 10th largest market. The company sees great sales potential in the country, where the average car is 16 years old.
