Renault SA has moved closer to possible charges that it rigged some of its diesel vehicles to evade European emission standards, according to Le Monde.
The newspaper says investigators with ISAT, the French transport research institute, have questioned engine software used in Renault’s Clio supermini and Captur small crossover vehicles. They say the software partially shuts down emission controls in an ambient air temperature range common in everyday use but outside the range encountered during certification tests, Le Monde says.
The investigators also say a system designed to purge an oxides of nitrogen trap in the exhaust system did not function at speeds below 50 kph (31 mph). As a result, the filter clogged and was rendered ineffective.
French authorities began investigating possible cheating by Renault, PSA, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Volkswagen shortly after the VW diesel scandal began four years ago.
