The United Auto Workers union has been officially approved to represent skilled trades workers at Volkswagen AG’s assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The U.S. National Labor Relations Board made it so earlier today by certifying the 71% “yes” vote held in early December by about 162 employees. Though small in size, the victory marks the UAW first success in organizing a foreign-owned assembly plant in the South.

The Chattanooga skilled trades workers will be represented by UAW Local 42. The union opened the local near the factory a year ago after losing a close plantwide attempt in February 2014 to organize the facility.

VW had protested the skilled trades vote, preferring the union stage a new all-worker election instead. The UAW says it is preparing to do just that.
