As expected, some 48,000 of the United Auto Workers Union members began a strike at midnight Sunday against General Motors Co. facilities in the U.S.

Negotiations for a new four-year labor contract between the two sides resumes at 10 a.m. today.

Over the weekend GM offered the union $7 billion in future U.S. investments, the addition of 5,400 hourly jobs, better pay, improved benefits and $8,000 ratification bonuses.

The union describes the package as GM’s “first serious offer” and claims the walkout might have been averted if it had come earlier. Sunday’s strike is the UAW’s first nationwide walkout at GM in 12 years.

President Donald Trump weighed in last night, urging that the two sides “get together and make a deal!”
