Nissan Motor Co. plans to introduce an extended-range electric version of its Note (Versa in the U.S.) minicar, in which the car’s battery is charged by a small built-in piston engine, The Nikkei says.
The newspaper says the plug-in car will retail in Japan for about 2 million yen ($19,200).
The powertrain is expected to lower the Note’s fuel consumption by 40%, making it the most fuel-efficient vehicles sold in Japan. Reports of an extended-range hybrid EV were widely reported last December.
The system planned for the Note EV is similar in concept to the one used by the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid. In that car, a piston engine automatically kicks in when needed to power a generator that replenishes the car’s battery.
