Nissan Motor Co. says it expects to reopen its six assembly plants in Japan next Monday after updating its final safety inspection system to ensure only certified personnel perform the examinations.

The company suspended operations on Oct. 19 after admitting it has been using unqualified personnel and contract workers for 20 years to make the government-mandated inspections. The tests apply only to vehicles sold in Japan.

The shutdown and scandal caused Nissan’s sales to plunge by an estimated 30% in Japan last month.

In early October Nissan began recalling 1.2 million vehicles delivered within the past three years so the cars could be re-inspected. The company did not call back older models, because cars in Japan are required to undergo separate safety checks every three years.
