Nissan Motor Co. began a two-week production shutdown today in Japan to reconfigure its government-mandated final inspection process.
Last month Japan’s transport ministry found that a final safety check required before vehicles can be sold in Japan was being performed by unqualified employees. Nissan announced on Sept. 20 it had taken corrective action. But earlier this week investigators found that the fraudulent practice continued at three Nissan facilities.
Nissan says it will use its nationwide suspension to consolidate the multiple inspection lines in its plants that it blames for the problem. The company also vows to restrict access to the inspection area to certified technicians.
Nissan adds that it may use certified dealerships in Japan to re-inspect some 34,000 vehicles built since Sept. 20.
