Mitsubishi Motors Corp. says illegal procedures it used to hike the rated fuel economy of its most popular minicars were applied to others models too, The Nikkei reports.
The company confirms the incorrect testing method, which it describes as closer to the technique used for the U.S. market, was applied to other MMC models.
President Tetsuro Aikawa told reporters earlier today the company doesn’t yet know the full scope of the cheating and can’t predict how it will impact earnings.
An internal audit determined that results for at least 625,000 MMC models, including MMC's best-selling eK minicars, were manipulated to produce better fuel economy ratings. The company plans to set up a panel of outsiders to determine how and why the test data was manipulated. The group is expected to produce a final report in about three months.
