Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is beginning the processes of closing its factory in Normal, Ill., after failing to find a buyer for the 27-year-old facility, The Nikkei reports, without citing any sources.
But the Tokyo-based newspaper says MMC will suspend plans to lay off the facility's workforce if it can find a new owner for the factory by November.
MMC announced in July it would close the Illinois plant in November if it failed to find a buyer by then. The plant was launched as a joint venture with Chrysler Corp. and taken over by MMC in 1991. The plant's output peaked at 220,000 vehicles in 2000, but production slumped to 69,200 units in 2014. The facility currently makes only the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV.
