Government investigators raided the Japanese headquarters and Nagoya assembly plant of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. earlier today. They were looking for additional evidence of falsified fuel economy data.
MMC admitted in April it doctored the efficiency ratings of four popular minivehicles, two of which are marketed in Japan by Nissan Motor Co. This week an investigation by Japan’s transport authority found eight more models, including SUVs, that were improperly rated.
The company has admitted that for 25 years it has either estimated or used incorrect test methods to rate the Japanese fuel economy of its vehicles.
It’s the third cheating scandal to hit MMC in the past 15 years. In 2000 and 2004 the company admitted it had concealed safety defects in its cars and Fuso commercial trucks from customers and government agencies for nearly three decades. MMC eventually recalled more than 1 million vehicles.
