Malaysia is updating its national automotive policy to focus on artificial intelligence, big data, connectivity, factory automation, mobility services and next-generation vehicles.

The new policy, expected to be finalized this summer, also will include provisions for high-speed rail lines, road repairs and other infrastructure improvements.

Malaysia launched its national auto strategy in 2014 with a goal of becoming globally competitive as it eased restrictions on foreign carmakers. The plan called for improving vehicle safety and boosting fuel efficiency.

The Malaysia Automotive Institute says the program is running slightly ahead of schedule, with more than half of the vehicles sold last year designated as energy-efficient models.

Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is running for re-election next week, vows to continue support for the auto industry’s transformation. The hotly contested campaign pits Najib against former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. The 92-year-old Mahathir left office in 2003 and helped Najib get elected in 2009.
