Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is replacing the 2.0-liter diesel engine it has sourced from former owner Ford Motor Co. with its own 2.0-liter all-aluminum powerplant, Automotive News Europe reports. It notes the carmaker previously did the same with a 2.2-liter diesel supplied by Ford.
The 2.0-liter engines account for about 25% of all powerplants used by JLR, or about 130,000 units per year, a source tells the newspaper.
The new powerplant belongs to the company's expanding Ingenium family of modular powerplants. It will go into production in Wolverhampton, England, later this year and in China in 2017. The new design will be offered with output as great as 300 hp and is as much as 15% more fuel efficient than the old engine.
ANE says Ford will continue to supply V-6 diesels and V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines to the carmaker, which was acquired by Tata Motors Ltd. in 2008. But JLR is expected by 2020 to also replace the V-6 engines it sources from Ford.
