Italy and Spain are beginning to create legal frameworks to govern the use of autonomous vehicles, says Automotive News Europe.
Spain’s government traffic ministry approved guidelines in late 2015 that cover all levels of self-driving capabilities. The agency’s director general tells reporters his group will follow up no later than 2020 with a more a comprehensive plan that details rules for robotic vehicles and how they are insured.
aly passed its first law in February to permit the testing of autonomous driving systems on designated roads as permitted by local authorities, ANE reports. The law says such vehicles must have a onboard backup driver who can take immediate control at any time.
The Italian law defines an autonomous vehicle as one that can drive itself on predetermined roads under specific conditions. Only a few such tests have been conducted in the country to date.
