Honda Motor Co. plans in August to begin retooling one of its assembly lines in Marysville, Ohio, to make electrified vehicles.
The company tells Automotive News the process will take a few years, during which lost production will be made up by other lines. Second-shift workers will be reassigned to avoid layoffs.
The program’s leisurely pace reflects Honda’s view that the market for electrified vehicles will grow slowly and steadily. The company has said that it expects two-thirds of its global vehicle output will be electrified by 2030.
For now, Honda offers three Honda- and Acura-brand electrified models in the U.S., almost all of them hybrids. The exception is the company’s Clarity midsize sedan, which is offered with a choice of plug-in hybrid, battery-powered or fuel cell powertrain.
Henio Arcangeli, who heads Acura and Honda brands in North America, declined to tell AN what models will be produced in Marysville.
