Germany’s new transport minister says he is no “buddy” of automotive bosses, describing himself as more aligned with auto workers and diesel vehicle owners.
Andreas Scheuer, who replaces Alexander Dobrindt, tells Bild that he opposes local bans on older diesels. He also rejects a proposed badging system that would identify older and higher-polluting vehicles, calling it a first step toward driving bans.
Scheuer promises to hold “very, very serious talks” with carmakers about how they can help improve Germany’s urban air quality. He tells Bild he expects cooperation and doesn’t want to force companies to, for example, retrofit old diesels.
