A regional court in Germany says it will select one of about 170 lawsuits against Volkswagen AG as a model to help speed the resolution of all the complaints.

The unusual step, akin to the class-action legal process in the U.S., involves investors who claim they suffered losses because VW delayed announcing last September that it had manipulated 11 million diesels to cheat emission laws. VW says it complied with securities disclosure rules.

The court in Braunschweig says it won’t select the model case until at least October, Bloomberg News reports. The news service notes that, unlike a class-action lawsuit in the U.S., a resolution for the model case will have no legal impact on the other claims.
