Volvo Car Corp. plans to introduce a fully autonomous vehicle by 2021, according to CEO Hakan Samuelsson.
He tells Bloomberg News that the company is evaluating potential partnerships to improve its software engineering and cloud-based services. He notes that the enabling technology isn’t something most carmakers can develop entirely on their own.
As part of previously announced plans, Volvo will begin testing vehicles with various driver-assist technologies next year in China, Sweden and the U.K. Consumers will test as many as 100 vehicles under real world conditions in each market.
Company officials have estimated that advanced automated driving technologies could add £10,000 ($14,600) or more to the cost of future vehicles.
