A new facility to develop performance guidelines and test procedures for high-voltage batteries used in electric vehicles has been opened by the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt, Germany.

The €17 million ($18.5 million) center, dubbed ZSZ-e, also will test batteries. The center's test stand can evaluate battery performance under simultaneous exposure to temperatures and humidity changes and varying levels of electrical loads, vibration and shaking.

The facility is funded in part by Germany federal and state governments. Fraunhofer LBF has conducted electromobility research since 2009.
