Ford Motor Co. is offering Apple Inc.’s CarPlay and Google Inc.’s Android Auto smartphone connectivity capability to 2016-model vehicles equipped with the carmaker’s Sync 3 infotainment software.
The free upgrade can be done wirelessly via a so-called over-the-air update (a first for Ford), but installing the software through the vehicle’s USB drive or by visiting a dealership. Ford says the software will be available for about 800,000 2016 vehicles in the U.S.
The upgrades can be done in wi-fi enabled vehicles when the "automatic system updates" feature is on. The system will continue to download the information once the process has started, regardless of whether the vehicle's ignition is on. But Ford notes that downloading the CarPlay/Android Auto software to a USB drive and plugging it into a corresponding vehicle port is faster.
