European Group Targets New Fuel Cell Stack Design
U.K.-based Intelligent Energy Holdings plc is leading a European working group to further develop its proprietary 90kW “evaporatively cooled” fuel cell technology.
U.K.-based Intelligent Energy Holdings plc is leading a European working group to further develop its proprietary 90kW “evaporatively cooled” fuel cell technology. The €5 million ($5.7 million) project, dubbed VolumetriQ, is funded by the European Commission-backed Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking initiative.
IE’s fuel cell stack design uses a heat vaporization thermal cooling system, which the company says eliminates the need for circulating coolant through individual cooling channels between each cell. This reduces stack mass, volume and weight, while enhancing power density and packaging flexibility, according to the developer.
Other participants in the program include ElringKlinger, Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells, Pretexo, Solvay Specialty Polymers and France’s University Montpellier. BMW and Daimler will collaborate to help set stack requirements.
The three-year program aims to develop fuel cell stacks that can be produced in high-volume vehicle applications by 2020. The program will focus on optimizing component designs, improving manufacturing processes and reducing costs.
