Dodge Journey Production to Shift to U.S. from Mexico

Chrysler Group LLC will build the next-generation Dodge Journey compact crossover at its assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., according to AutomotiveCompass LLC.
The West Chester, Pa.-based analysis firm cites unidentified supplier sources who say Journey production will begin there in January 2016. The current model is made in Toluca, Mexico, alongside the Freemont, a variant sold by Chrysler owner Fiat SpA in Europe and South America.
AutomotiveCompass says the future Journey will ride on the same Fiat-developed platform as the Chrysler 200 midsize car and at least three other Chrysler-Fiat models. Chrysler is completing a $1 billion overhaul of the Sterling Heights facility this year in time to begin building the next iteration of the 200, which is scheduled to go on sale early next year.
The Toluca factory also makes the North American version of the Fiat 500 city car. Automotive News reported earlier this year that Fiat will consolidate output of the next-generation 500 at its plant in Tychy, Poland. The newspaper notes that the production moves will leave the Mexican plant with no announced product after 2016.
