Columbus, Ind.-based Cummins Inc. has acquired Johnson Matthey plc’s battery systems business for an undisclosed price.
The U.K.-based business, which specializes in high-voltage battery systems for electric and hybrid vehicles, has 50 employees. The deal supports Cummins’ previously announced plans to deliver electrified powertrains to unnamed truck customers in 2019.
Cummins also agreed to collaborate with Johnson Matthey to develop high-energy battery materials for commercial vehicle applications.
Moving forward, Johnson Matthey will focus on developing high-energy battery materials, including its enhanced lithium-nickel-oxide chemistry that promises significant performance benefits over current nickel-manganese-cobalt and nickel-cobalt-aluminum blends.
