Aachen has become Germany’s second city ordered by a court to impose a partial diesel ban to meet pollution control goals.
A regional court in Aachen has ruled that the city must begin to control access by older and dirtier diesels no later than January 2019, the Financial Times reports. The newspaper says about 70 cities in Germany have violated EU emission limits.
Aachen will be the second German cities to impose the narrowly targeted restrictions. Last month Hamburg became the region’s first city to initiate a partial diesel ban, announcing its intend shortly after Germany’s highest administrative court ruled that cities have the right to control diesel traffic for the sake of meeting air quality standards.
