Continental AG and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE) have developed a blockchain-based data-sharing platform they aim to launch later this year.

The companies envision carmakers using the technology to monetize data and improve autonomous and connected vehicle systems. Blockchain uses a decentralized network, which the partners say makes it easier and more secure to share data among various constituents.

Leveraging the power of “swarm intelligence,” blockchain could be used to provide real-time driving condition updates for autonomous vehicles.

Such a platform also would enable companies to trade data with each other to improve digital services or to monetize vehicle data. Consumers, however, should be provided an opt-out option, Conti and HPE note.

Jointly developed by HPE Pointnext and Continental’s Interior division, the new platform will enable multiple centralized and decentralized systems to interconnect and share data. The companies say they have received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback from car manufacturers during initial demonstrations.

HPE was spun off from Hewlett-Packard Co. in 2015.

Several other companies also are developing blockchain automotive applications. Earlier this week, Daimler AG announced a pilot program for its purchasing operations.
