Fewer than 6,500 fuel cell-powered cars and crossover vehicles were sold worldwide from 2013 through the end of 2017, according to Information Trends, a Washington, D.C.-based research company.

Just over half (53%) of the deliveries were in California, the only state in the U.S. that allows fuel cell vehicles to be sold. Japan accounted for 38% of the sales, and the remaining 9% were in Europe, the report says.

Toyota Motor Corp. dominates the field, with its Mirai sedan generating more than 75% of global sales, according to the research firm. The remainder was split between the Honda Clarity (13%) and Hyundai Tucson ix35 (11%).

Another eight companies are expected to offer fuel cell vehicles by 2021. Information Trends lists BMW, Kia, Lexus, Mahindra & Mahindra/Pininfarina, Mercedes-Benz, Riversimple, Ronn Motor and Tata among the new entrants.

In a previous report, Information Trends predicted cumulative global sales will grow to 20 million units by 2032. By that time, it says, annual sales of such vehicles will top 5 million units.
