BMW AG is studying plans to open a factory in Thailand to make lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles, according to Industry Minister Atchaka Sibunruang.
Atchaka tells reporters construction of the 2 billion-baht ($57 million) facility is likely to begin about one year from now. BMW says it will issue a statement on Monday.
Local battery production would reduce the cost of hybrids sold in Thailand. The country also is a regional hub for several carmakers.
