Ballard Will Supply 7th-Generation Fuel Cell System for China Buses

Canada's Ballard Power Systems Inc. has won a $17 million contract from Guangdong Synergy Hydrogen Power Technology Co. to supply fuel cell systems and related technology for about 300 fuel cell-powered city buses in Foshan and Yunfu, China.
The agreement includes 30-, 60- and 90-kW fuel cell configurations, with the less powerful systems targeted at small buses and range-extender applications.
The buses will be fitted with Ballard's 7th-generation FCvelocity-HD7 power module, which has a simplified design with fewer parts and a lower parasitic load, according to the company. And high-volume production processes now can be used for several parts to help reduce costs. The HD7 module is 30% cheaper than its predecessor and represents a 65% cost reduction in the company's fuel cell technology since 2009, according to Ballard.
The new agreement follows an earlier one this summer under which Ballard will supply 90-kW HD7 fuel cell modules to Synergy Hydrogen and Nantong Zehe New Energy Technology Co. The $10 million deal covers 33 fuel cell buses.
