Volkswagen AG says it will resume vehicle production in central Kenya by year-end after a four-decade hiatus.
The carmaker’s South African unit will open a factory in Thika to assemble the VW Vivo mini-hatchback from imported kits. Reuters notes that Kenya currently makes a few thousand trucks and buses per year from kits supplied by such carmakers as Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota.
VW has not disclosed how much it will invest or indicated how many vehicles it aims to build in Kenya. The company hopes to eventually add other models to its lineup in the country.
Kenya’s passenger vehicle market consists primarily of imported used cars. VW currently supplies the country in part from its assembly operations in South Africa.
