KBA, Germany’s motor authority, has approved steps Volkswagen AG may implement to bring more than 800,000 of its diesel engines into emission compliance.
The ruling covers CC sport sedans, Eos sporty two-doors and Passat sedans powered by a 2.0-liter diesel from VW’s EA 189 family of engines. VW says its dealers are ready to begin retrofitting the engines immediately.
VW emphasizes that KBA says the updates won’t alter engine fuel economy, performance or noise characteristics. The company’s plan to begin fixing 1.2-llter diesels in the current quarter has been delayed by an unspecified period.
VW has admitted fitting 11 million diesels with software to cheat emission tests. Of the total, 8.5 million vehicles are in Europe, including 2.5 million in Germany. The company has repaired about 50,000 engines to date.
