Volkswagen AG confirms it has halted the sale of new vehicles in Europe that are equipped with diesel engines controlled by software that could cheat emission tests.

The suspension affects only an unspecified number of vehicle fitted with VW’s Euro 5-spec “E 189” diesels. VW says it has ordered dealers to hold those models until the company can upgrade them.

VW plans in January to begin recalling some 8.5 million vehicles in the EU, including 2.4 million in Germany, that contain the cheater software. Analysts estimate the company will be able to simply update software in more than half the affected cars.

But the company will need to install emission control hardware in an estimated 3.6 million vehicles, according to some observers. VW has indicated it may need to replace entire vehicles in some cases. The campaign also covers Audi, SEAT and Skoda brand vehicles with E 189 engines.
