Volkswagen AG sold 3,200 diesel-powered vehicles in the U.S. in April—the first month since October 2015 it has been allowed to do after admitting it had rigged 560,000 diesels to evade emission laws.
The sales came from the group’s 11,000-unit inventory of 2015 model VW Beetle, Golf and Passat cars. The vehicles were decertified for sale by the Environmental Protection Agency when the cheating scandal surfaced.
VW was cleared in January to sell the cars after reaching an agreement to update the emission control systems on 67,000 of the 2015-model engines. Sources tell Reuters more of the diesels are likely to be approved for sale over the next several weeks.
At their peak, diesels accounted for about 25% of VW brand sales in the U.S. April’s ratio for the marque was 12%.
