Volkswagen AG has acquired 5% of QuantumScape Corp., a California-based developer of next-generation battery technologies, sources tell Bloomberg News.

The four-year-old startup is working on a solid-state battery chemistry that can't overheat as lithium-ion batteries can. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn says the technology has the potential to boost the range of the carmaker's battery-powered Golf to more than 400 miles from the 83 miles for the current model.

Bloomberg says QuantumScape hopes to complete tests next summer to prove the viability of its battery for automotive use.
