Volkswagen AG says it has suspended plans to open a large assembly plant in Manisa, Turkey, by 2022.
The move is in response to international criticism, including U.S. economic sanctions, over Turkey’s invasion of Syria last week.
VW said two weeks ago that it was still in final negotiations for the facility. The company also reportedly had been considering a site in Bulgaria.
The €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) facility is expected to have annual capacity to make 300,000 Skoda Superb and VW Passat midsize sedans.
If completed in Turkey, the factory will be operated by Volkswagen Turkey Otomotiv Sanayi ve Ticaret AS and eventually employ roughly 4,000 people.
