Volkswagen AG is considering a plan to offer current owners in Germany a discount on a new car if they turn in one of the company’s older diesel-powered vehicles equipped with rogue software designed to cheat government emission standards, Germany’s DPA news agency reports.
VW plans to recall 8.5 million such cars in Europe, including 4.5 million in Germany. That means each VW dealer in Germany will need to repair about 1,100 vehicles, DPA estimates. The new service estimates each repair will take about 1.5 hours to complete.
DPA cites unnamed sources who say discounts would probably be offered primarily for owners of cars equipped with 1.6-liter diesels that belong to the company’s now discontinued E 189 engine family.
