Volkswagen AG is in discussions to settle claims in Canada about roughly 100,000 diesels it sold there that had been rigged to avoid emission standards, Handelsblatt reports.

The newspaper says VW is pursuing a plan similar to the one it reached in June in the U.S. Canadian media reports in April cited VW Canada spokesmen as saying the U.S. settlement would be mirrored in Canada.

The $15.3 billion deal in the U.S. includes paying some 475,000 owners at least $5,100 each in reparations, an offer to repair or buy back affected models, and $2.7 billion to fund environmental remediation and zero-emission vehicle programs.

Handelsblatt, which offers no source, says a similar settlement in Canada would cost VW about US$2 billion.
