A federal district court judge in Detroit has set an April 18 start date for the trial of Volkswagen AG executive Oliver Schmidt.
Schmidt faces 11 felony charges linked to the company’s diesel emission cheating scandal. The charges carry a collective maximum sentence of 169 years in prison.
Schmidt has headed VW’s emissions and engineering center in Michigan. The U.S. Dept. of Justice indicted him and five other current or former VW executives in January, but he was the only one in the U.S. at the time. He was arrested in Miami on Jan. 7.
Schmidt’s attorney is expected to ask for a delay. Schmidt is considered an extreme flight risk and is being held without bond.
