Volvo Trucks Approved for New Bio-Diesel Fuel

AB Volvo has completed testing and validated the use of a new “renewable” biodiesel fuel for all its truck engines in North America. The company says it is the first truck maker in the industry to approve the fuel for real-world applications.
Renewable diesel, which Volvo describes as a second-generation alternative fuel, is derived from biomass feedstocks such as oils and animal fats. But it is made by a different process than previous biodiesel blends that lessens low-temperature performance issues associated with those fuels, according to Volvo. Other purported benefits include fewer particulate matter emissions and lower maintenance costs.
Depending on the feedstock used, the new biodiesel fuel can help reduce a vehicle’s greenhouse gas emissions by 15%-80% compared with engines powered by conventional diesel fuel, Volvo says, citing a report by the California Air Resources Board.
