Next year Volvo Car Corp. will introduce gasoline and diesel versions of its new 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine in an unspecified model built on the company’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

The new engine will be based on Volvo’s current 2.0-liter 4-banger and will be available with and without turbocharging, Autocar reports. The 3-cylinder engine also will be paired with an electric motor and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission in a hybrid-electric system that generates a combined 250 hp, CEO Hakan Samuelsson tells British enthusiast magazine.

The 2018 model XC40 compact crossover vehicle, Volvo's the first CMA-based vehicle, is a likely candidate to get the 3-cylinder engine. Positioned below the current XC60, the smaller crossover will compete against the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

The CMA platform is expected to underpin several other Volvo vehicles. It also will carry the upcoming Lynk 01 crossover in China from parent Geely Automobile Holding Co.’s new Lynk & Co. brand.
