Volvo Car Group has begun construction of its first American assembly plant, which is expected to begin operations by the end of 2018.
The $500 million factory in Ridgeville, S.C., will build next-generation S60 small sedans at an initial annual rate of about 50,000 units. Volvo says the facility will be able to make twice that number of vehicles when it adds a second unspecified model.
The factory will become the worldwide source for S60 cars, which ride on Volvo's new "scalable product architecture" platform. The same chassis carries the XC90 crossover vehicle. Volvo currently builds cars on the new platform in China and Sweden.
